This festival-style celebration marks the official kickoff of the Smithsonian’s year-long America 250 initiative. The day will feature live performances, curated tours, interactive activities, and special programming honoring 250 years of American history and innovation.
March–April 2026 | National Cherry Blossom Festival
March 20 – April 12, 2026
One of Washington’s most iconic annual events, the Cherry Blossom Festival will incorporate expanded programming tied to the America 250 theme year. Many events take place around the Tidal Basin and the National Mall, offering visitors a stunning seasonal backdrop alongside commemorative celebrations.
The festival will highlight themes of heritage, international friendship, and national reflection as part of the America 250 commemorative year.
May 2026 | America’s Ball for the Mall
May 7, 2026
National Mall
A signature gala and fundraising event connected to National Mall 250 initiatives, bringing together civic leaders, cultural institutions, and supporters in honor of this historic milestone.
July 4, 2026 | 250th Independence Day
July 4, 2026 will mark the official 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Commemorative ceremonies, fireworks, exhibitions, and special programming are expected throughout Washington, DC, particularly around the National Mall and historic federal landmarks.
August 2026 | Freedom 250 Grand Prix of Washington, DC
August 21–23, 2026
An IndyCar street race planned near the National Mall and Pennsylvania Avenue, adding a high-energy, international sporting dimension to the 250th anniversary celebrations.
September 2026 | DC JazzFest – America 250 Theme Year
September 2–6, 2026
DC JazzFest will incorporate America 250-themed performances and programming, celebrating both the nation’s musical heritage and its forward-looking creative spirit.
In addition to major festivals and signature events, Washington’s museums, monuments, and historic institutions will present expanded exhibitions and programming throughout the year.
