FAMILY

Are you ready for the perfect vacation en famille? Our knowledgeable concierges are always on hand with suggestions to help you keep the children entertained – from green spaces to family-friendly museums, many of which are within a few blocks of Sofitel Lafayette Square.

Take in the wonders of the National Mall (0.7 miles from Sofitel), a monumental park dotted with memorials honoring past presidents, brave veterans and Martin Luther King Jr., plus other grand attractions like the Reflecting Pool. Relax on a bench while the children play under the leafy canopy, then stroll to the Tidal Basin. If you’re visiting in the spring, you’ll be treated to the enchanting sight of blossoming cherry trees lining the banks. It is truly magnifique. Whatever the season, take to the water on a pedal boat and admire the sights from another vantage point.

Many of Washington’s renowned museums stand on the grounds of the National Mall. Stare into the maw of a mega-toothed shark at the National Museum of Natural History (free), or see fragments of the iconic Star-Spangled Banner (yes, the very one that inspired our national anthem) at the National Museum of American History (free). You can even touch the Moon – or at least a shard of it – at the National Air and Space Museum (free).

My name is Bond. James Bond. If you are a family of aspiring 007s, head to the International Spy Museum (1.5 miles, $) and test your undercover skills with a series of interactive challenges – from memory tests and decoding messages to crawling through an air duct. Of course, the real challenge is managing to look debonair while doing it…

Has Washington inspired you to enter the political arena? Hone your public speaking skills at Planet Word (0.3 miles, free), where a teleprompter helps you deliver famous speeches like President John F. Kennedy’s 1961 inaugural address – although les enfants might prefer Mufasa’s Morning Lesson from The Lion King.

At the National Children’s Museum (0.5 miles, $), under-12s can step inside SpongeBob SquarePants’ pineapple house, explore the dynamics of hitting baseballs and climb all over the lofty Dream Machine.

Other nearby family-friendly attractions include the National Zoo (2.5 miles, free) and Rock Creek Park (3 miles, free), a lovely green area for biking, picnicking, horseback riding and wildlife spotting.

Then there are all the hotel-based amenities for our petits guests, from a welcome toy upon check-in to cribs and a children’s menu with fun dishes like Poulet s’il vous plaît. We also have a range of classic board games, so if you fancy a family game night, all you need to bring is a winning mindset. After a full day in the city, though, you might just want to settle down with a blockbuster from our on-demand movie service. Or take advantage of our babysitting option and sneak downstairs to Opaline Bar for a well-deserved nightcap.
